When it comes to new rallying and rallycross experiences from Codemasters, we can’t wait to see what’s next. Codemasters has the official WRC licence for five years starting in 2023 and is currently in the process of being bought out by Electronic Arts. What’s next for the fabled series then? We’ve seen of late the DiRT Rally games become focussed sims, while the numbered DIRT series in the form of DIRT 5 become an accessible racer. 📙 Patch notes: /UymnmexyiA- DIRT February 16, 2021 🔌 You will not be able to connect to online parts of the game for roughly an hour or so. And it better have a Metro 6R4.🚧 Version 1.17 of DiRT Rally 2.0 will release on Tuesday, February 16 at 10.00 UTC I just hope it’s as fun as its 2009 pinnacle was. Maybe the decision to capitalize the I in DIRT signals a new direction. DiRT 4 just felt like DiRT Rally 2.0 Lite. It also appears to be returning some identity to a series that has slid towards relative anonymity since Colin McRae: DiRT 2. There are clear V-sync issues, too.īut if DIRT 5 irons out its weird handling, uncanny valley-like graphics and unpredictable gravity, it’s almost certain that this will be worth the wait. The tire motion graphics, too, are horrible–even if you’re going at 4mph, they shimmer and shift like you’re doing 90. Having seen how nicely Codemasters can render cars in the likes of F1 2020, DIRT 5 seems to display every vehicle with a fuzzy overlayer, making them look like you’re imagining them in a mirage. Putting the inevitable console crashes and frozen screens to one side–they’re part and parcel of pre-release previews, after all–some core elements of gameplay are still a little… off.Ĭhief among these issues is the look of the game. The creation mode isn't the easiest thing to use, as it stands right now.

It’s essentially a gridless, modern take on Create-A-Park mode from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, with a seemingly inexhaustible limit on the items you place. Conquer stunning global routes and drive an iconic roster of cars. The creation suite is the backbone of Playgrounds’ variety of stages. DIRT 5 is the bold new off-road arcade racing experience created by Codemasters.

Transitions between dirt and tarmac were divine, and while it took a long time to nail turns with panache, I’ve not felt the same kind of satisfaction since Forza Horizon 4. When the flow is there–and, crucially, the right car is chosen for the stage– DIRT’s arcade driving mechanics were delightful. DIRT 5 really does give a ridiculous amount of freedom. Knowing that every single uploaded stage has its own leaderboard could empower gamers to create some utterly daft levels requiring almost superhuman levels of skill, and I for one endorse it.

Often, transitions between the floor and obstacles sprang the car into the sky, or flipped it sideways some of the elements themselves felt impossible to tackle.Įven the levels offered by Codemasters were subject to glitches based on item placement, but admittedly, this sometimes added to the fun.

However, and as with all user-generated content, certain elements proved problematic quickly. Each level and car was an exciting test, but only after getting the hang of the controls, which were surprisingly twitchy. Only a handful of pre-created arenas were available, each playing nicely to a diverse range of vehicles. The sprint cars are as crazy to drive as they look.
